Alignment Tool
First, check to make sure your STEERING WHEEL is properly aligned on the steering shaft as follows:
- Center your steering wheel as though you wanted to go straight forward.
- Turn the steering wheel to full lock, counting the degrees of rotation. Recenter your steering wheel and repeat this same step in the opposite direction. The degrees of rotation to the left should be equal to the degrees of rotation to the right.
- If its not, remove your steering wheel from the splined shaft and then rotate the wheel in the necessary direction (towards the larger of the two angle measurements taken in step one) and the reinstall the wheel onto the shaft. Repeat steps two and three until the measurement taken in each direction are equal.
Install the tool onto each of the front wheels. If your UTV has aftermarket splined lug nuts install the sleeve over the lug nuts and tighten the thumbscrews. Use the jam nuts to set the ruler flush against the tire without causing it to bend. Once the ruler is in place finger tighten the jam nuts on either side of the pendulum just tight enough that the pendulum wont swing while you are taking measurements. Repeat these steps on the opposite side of the vehicle.
- Choose a center point on your vehicle chassis to use when taking your measurements (i.e. your front bumper, the front grill, a bolt or feature on the chassis or bodywork). BE SURE the point that you choose is as close to the center of the chassis as possible.
- Before taking any measurements, make sure that your steering wheel is pointed straight (centered).
- Measure the distance from the outside of one of the rulers to the center point chosen earlier. Repeat this step on the opposite side. RECORD your measurements. The actual length of these measurements is not important at this point. Right now you want for these two measurements to be equal. If they are NOT equal, use the steps in your service manual for adjusting your tie rods (lengthening the tie rod ill shorten the measurement on that side of the vehicle Shortening the rod will increase the measurement).
- After you have made your adjustment we find its best practice to rotate your steering wheel to left and right a small amount to settle the vehicle before you return the steering wheel to center to take your next measurements. Repeat step three until your measurements are equal.
Now that your wheels are symmetrical to the center of the chassis it time to measure your toe angle. You are going to be taking four measurements to determine toe angle.
- Be sure your steering wheel is pointed straight ahead (centered)
- Measure the distance between the two rulers in FRONT of your wheels. There are two different measurements that you need to record in this step. The FIRST measurement is the distance between the outer edge of the two rulers when measured in front of the tire.
- For the SECOND measurement you need to record the distance from the center of the ruler to the point where your tape measure intersected the ruler when you took your first measurement.
- For your THIRD measurement you will repeat step two except this time you will be measuring the distance between the two rulers behind the tire and record your measurement.
- The FORTH measurement you need to take is the distance from the center of the ruler to the point where your tape measure intersected the ruler when you took your first measurement.
